Commutative property

The students were learning about commutative property of addition and multiplication where you can reverse the order or an operation and achieve the same results.  We were thinking of sentences that satisfy this property in the real world!

Here is what they came up with:

A + B = B+A

Read the breadwinner then the land of stories = reading the land of stories and then breadwinner

Say a bad word and stomp your feet = stomp your feet say a bad word

Pants on shirt on = shirt on pants on

Shampoo conditioner soap = soap shampoo conditioner

Run in circle clockwise = run in a circle counter clockwise

NON commutative

Fight a war get an army ; get an army fight a war

Put on a safety suit then jump in radiation; jump in radiation then put on a safety suit

Go on a run then have a shower; have a shower then go on a run

Finding patterns from graphs

This week the students looked at a few more real world pattern problems.  We figured out how to convert kilometers to miles using a pattern rule.  We also read through a graph on teacher pay and found patterns, created equations and discussed the benefits of schooling in relation to pay.

This week the students will be looking at commutative property and how that relates to balancing equations.  There is a section in the grade 6 textbook on this that we will be looking through.

Wednesday, 28 September 2016

We are working on finding pattern rules, looking at the relationship between input and output in a data table and extending patterns.

Here is a link to a lesson that explains this concept: Lessons: Patterns

As an extra challenge, Ms.Bly's group has been trying to figure out a rule for converting celsius to fahrenheit.  We will be graphing our data as well.

Math 6E

This year Ms.Sawchuk and myself will be teaching 6E Math.  There will be more information on how this will look as the year begins.

Here is an overview of some important information for all students.

Math 6

Ms. J. Sawchuk
Meredith Bly
It is preferable to contact me by email for all inquiries. Thank you

IMPORTANT FACTORS FOR YOUR SUCCESS IN THIS CLASS:
  • Attendance and punctuality
  • Effort and participation
  • A positive attitude
  • Responsibility for your learning and behaviour
  •
UNITS OF STUDY: (Timeline may be adjusted throughout the year)

Unit 1- Patterns and Equations                                  Beginning - October
Unit 2- Whole numbers                                              October - November
Unit 6-            Geometry/Measurement                                November - December
Unit 3-            Decimals                                                       January
Unit 5-            Fractions/Decimals                                        February - March
Unit 4-            Angles/Polygons                                            April
Unit 8- Transformations                                            May
Unit 7- Statistics and Probability                               June

Course Evaluation:
As per CBE guidelines, student work will be evaluated against the following outcomes using a 1-4 scale:
  • Understands mathematical concepts and relationships
  • Uses mathematical reasoning to analyze and solve problems
  • Explores and develops strategies for mental math and estimation
  • Develops and applies appropriate and efficient strategies for computation
  • Models, represents and communicates mathematical idea

More information about assessment can be found on the Calgary Board of Education website:
http://www.cbe.ab.ca/Parents/assessment-and-reporting/introduction.asp

MATERIALS TO BE BROUGHT TO EVERY CLASS:
  • Binder with dividers/Notebook
  • Supplies (Paper, pens, etc.)
  • Textbook

EXPECTATIONS: Students are expected to….
  • Arrive ON TIME and ready to participate
  • Complete all assignments and projects in a timely fashion, as well as review regularly
  • Have respect for others as well as any equipment in the classroom
  • Keep notes and work that is neat and well organized.
  • Make up missed work and seek extra help if needed

ASSIGNMENT POLICY:

-All assignments must be handed in to Ms. Sawchuk/Ms.Bly

-Due dates are to be strictly adhered to According to Elboya School Policies, projects and assignments will not be accepted after the ‘last day of acceptance’ unless discussed otherwise with the teacher. Instructions and deadlines will be posted on the Elboya VLC calendar or D2L.

-If a student has circumstances that they feel will not allow them to hand their work in on time, they must arrange for an extension BEFORE the due date by giving a reason in writing and having it signed by Ms. Sawchuk/Ms.Bly. The note must be handed in with the assignment

-If a student is absent the day an assignment is due, they are expected to hand in the assignment when they return or by e-mail.

-If a class is missed, the student is responsible for consulting the blog, or seeing a fellow classmate and coping missed notes.  It is the responsibility of the student to see Ms. Sawchuk/Ms.Bly outside of class time THE DAY they return to school to arrange a time when you can catch up on missed work, labs, quizzes or tests.

-If a student is absent the day an assignment is due, they are expected to hand in the assignment when they return or by e-mail.

-Assignments can be re-submitted for credit if a concept was not clearly understood.  This does NOT include assignments that are late and must be negotiated with Ms. Sawchuk

Extra help is always available – please see Ms. Sawchuk/Ms.Bly to arrange to meet in the morning or at lunch!

HAVE A GREAT YEAR!
