Commutative property

The students were learning about commutative property of addition and multiplication where you can reverse the order or an operation and achieve the same results.  We were thinking of sentences that satisfy this property in the real world!

Here is what they came up with:

A + B = B+A

Read the breadwinner then the land of stories = reading the land of stories and then breadwinner

Say a bad word and stomp your feet = stomp your feet say a bad word

Pants on shirt on = shirt on pants on

Shampoo conditioner soap = soap shampoo conditioner

Run in circle clockwise = run in a circle counter clockwise

NON commutative

Fight a war get an army ; get an army fight a war

Put on a safety suit then jump in radiation; jump in radiation then put on a safety suit

Go on a run then have a shower; have a shower then go on a run

Finding patterns from graphs

This week the students looked at a few more real world pattern problems.  We figured out how to convert kilometers to miles using a pattern rule.  We also read through a graph on teacher pay and found patterns, created equations and discussed the benefits of schooling in relation to pay.

This week the students will be looking at commutative property and how that relates to balancing equations.  There is a section in the grade 6 textbook on this that we will be looking through.
